Sector watch – Information technology
The IT industry posted a total of 10,000 job losses in March. The sector’s unemployment rate is at 5.2% a record high since 2004 but still much lower that the national average which is at 8.5%. According to the Labor Department, in the past nine months U.S. companies have cut about 380,000 IT jobs and employment is down 7% from its level of one year ago. However, the industry is well-positioned to rebound from these losses in the long-term as more public and private investments are made in the wireless arena. Re-design of the nation’s electrical grids should yield many opportunities in the IT field and these grids are critical for a range of energy, environmental and healthcare initiatives.
